#9. Coffee in a Paper Bag
Posted in Uncategorized on Apr 3rd, 2008

I have always found the practice that bodegas and street coffee vendors have of putting your morning coffee in a paper bag to be completely asinine. This only happens at these kind of establishments. Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts never do this. They must have realized long ago that this is a waste of time, trees and money. Coffee is not a “carry around in a bag for later” beverage. You drink it as soon as it is purchased, while it is still hot.
I can almost understand if you purchase several cups and can’t carry them all with two hands. But one cup?!? The lids on those little blue cheap cups are leaky. It takes a careful, steady hand to not have them drip all over the place. Maybe they could save money on bags and invest in better lids. Everyone would win.
If you have something else that requires a bag, like a muffin or a bagel, put that in the bag and leave the coffee out. I have two hands. I can hold them both. If not, inevitably, while dodging traffic and slow walkers on your way from where you bought the coffee and your desk at work, it will leak through the cup, leaving you with a soggy muffin and a wet bag threatening to give way and drop the coffee onto your shoes. They also always throw a few napkins into this bag, which are rendered useless when you need to wipe off your wet shoes, because they are coffee soaked as well. So then they have wasted a paper bag and napkins (and sometimes a straw, for no apparent reason).
Just hand me my coffee and save some trees…and my shoes.
